Starting Fresh

Free Fire throws you into a match with 49 other players and a shrinking zone. No tutorial. No hand-holding. You land, you loot, you fight, and hopefully you win. But without knowing the basics, you will die early and wonder what went wrong.

This guide covers everything a new player needs. Controls, weapons, characters, and the basic strategy that keeps you alive long enough to actually learn the game.

Controls and Movement

The default controls work but most experienced players customize them. Here is what matters.

Movement

The joystick on the left controls movement. Keep your thumb on it at all times. Standing still makes you an easy target. Even small movements make you harder to hit.

Aiming

The right side of the screen controls aim. Swipe to look around. The crosshair in the center is where your bullets go. Keep it at head level as you move.

Shooting

The fire button is on the right. Tap to shoot. Hold for automatic fire with automatic weapons. The size and position of this button matters. Make it large enough that you do not miss it in a panic.

Crouch and Prone

Crouching reduces your profile and improves accuracy. Use it during fights to make yourself harder to hit. Prone makes you flat on the ground. Use it in grass to hide but know that you cannot move quickly from prone.

Jump

Jumping is useful for climbing obstacles and peeking over walls. Do not jump during gunfights. It makes your movement predictable and you cannot shoot accurately while airborne.

Weapons for Beginners

Not all weapons are equal. Some are forgiving for new players. Others require skill that takes time to build.

Best Starter Weapons

MP40. High fire rate, easy to control, common drop. The MP40 is the most forgiving SMG for beginners. It shreds at close range and is easy to find.

M4A1. Reliable AR with moderate recoil. Works at all ranges. The M4A1 is not the best at anything but it is good at everything. A solid choice while you learn.

M1014. Semi-automatic shotgun. High damage at close range. Point and shoot. The M1014 does not require precise aim. Just get close and fire.

Weapons to Avoid as a Beginner

AWM. Bolt-action sniper. Requires precise headshots. Miss and you are exposed for the reload animation.

MAG-7. Pump shotgun. Slow fire rate means you need to hit every shot. Unforgiving for new players.

Gloo Wall-dependent weapons. Some weapons require Gloo Wall usage for effective close-range fights. Master the Gloo Wall first.

The Gloo Wall

The Gloo Wall is Free Fire’s signature mechanic. It is a deployable cover that blocks bullets and grenades. Learning to use it is the single most important skill for beginners.

How to Use It

Tap the Gloo Wall button to equip it. Aim where you want it and tap fire to deploy. The wall appears in front of you and blocks incoming fire.

When to Use It

  • During open-field fights to create instant cover
  • When pushing an enemy to close distance safely
  • When reviving a teammate in the open
  • When caught without natural cover

Practice

Go into training mode and practice deploying Gloo Walls quickly. The faster you can place them, the more situations you can survive. A Gloo Wall placed 0.5 seconds late is the difference between life and death.

Characters and Abilities

Every character in Free Fire has a unique ability. Some are better for beginners than others.

Best Starter Characters

Kelly. Increases sprinting speed. Speed helps with rotations and escaping bad positions. A simple ability that always helps.

Joseph. Movement speed boost when taking damage. This helps you survive initial hits and reposition.

Misa. Reduced damage while in a vehicle. Good for players who use vehicles for rotations.

Character Combinations

You can equip one active ability and three passive abilities. As a beginner, focus on one character and learn their ability before experimenting with combinations.

Basic Strategy

Landing

Do not land in the center of the map. Land at the edge where fewer players go. This gives you time to loot and learn without immediate pressure.

Looting

Pick up everything you can carry. Weapons, ammo, heals, Gloo Walls. You will figure out what you need later. For now, grab everything.

Fighting

As a beginner, fight only when you have an advantage:

  • The enemy does not see you
  • You have better position
  • You have more health
  • You have teammates with you

Avoid 50-50 fights where either player could win. You need experience, not coin flips.

Zone

Always stay inside the zone. If you are outside, move in immediately. The zone damage increases every phase. Getting caught in the blue is the most common way new players die.

Settings to Change

Before you play competitively, adjust these settings:

Sensitivity. Start at medium sensitivity. Increase if you cannot turn fast enough. Decrease if your aim is shaky.

Auto-pickup. Enable this. It picks up items automatically as you walk over them. Less time in menus means more time playing.

Controls layout. Customize the button positions to fit your hands. The default layout is not optimized for competitive play.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Standing still to shoot. Always move while shooting. Standing still makes you an easy target.

Ignoring Gloo Walls. The Gloo Wall is your best survival tool. Use it constantly.

Fighting in the open. Always fight near cover. Open-field fights are random and unpredictable.

Not healing. If you take damage, heal before the next fight. Entering a fight at 50 HP is a death sentence.

Progression

Do not worry about rank early. Play classic matches to learn the maps, weapons, and mechanics. Once you can consistently reach top 10 in classic, start playing ranked.

The goal at first is learning, not ranking up. The ranks will come naturally as your skills improve.

Final Thoughts

Free Fire is fast, chaotic, and unforgiving for new players. But the basics are simple: land safe, loot fast, fight smart, and use your Gloo Walls. Master these fundamentals and you will start winning matches. The rest comes with experience.
