BGMI Grenade and Utility Guide: When and How to Use Throwables

The Overlooked Edge

Most BGMI players land, grab a gun, and start looking for fights. The grenade slots sit empty the entire match. Meanwhile, the player who knows how to use utility wins engagements before a single bullet is fired.

Throwables are not secondary items. They are force multipliers. A well-placed frag grenade flushes an enemy out of cover. A smoke grenade lets you cross an open field alive. A stun grenade turns a 50-50 fight into a guaranteed kill.

The difference between Platinum and Conqueror players often comes down to utility usage, not just aim.

Frag Grenades: Your Opening Move

The frag grenade is the most aggressive throwable. It does 100 damage at close range and can knock or eliminate enemies behind cover.

When to Use a Frag

Enemy behind hard cover. If someone is peeking from behind a wall or rock, a grenade forces them to move. Throw it slightly past their position so the explosion catches them as they reposition.

Clearing a room. Before entering a building, toss a frag through the door or window. If you hear the hit marker, you know at least one enemy is inside and possibly weakened.

Third-party fights. When two squads are fighting, a grenade into the chaos can get free knocks. The players are focused on each other and not watching for throwables.

Throwing Tips

The cooking timer on frag grenades is 5 seconds. A perfectly cooked grenade explodes on arrival, giving the enemy no time to run. Practice the timing in training mode until you can consistently cook for 3-4 seconds before throwing.

The underhand throw is shorter and more precise for close range. Switch to it when throwing into a nearby window or around a corner. The arc is lower and easier to aim.

Lob over walls. The high arc throw sends the grenade over cover. Aim at the top of the wall and release at the peak of your throw animation. This is the best way to hit enemies who think they are safe.

Smoke Grenades: Your Best Friend

If you only carry one type of utility, make it smokes. Smoke grenades save more lives than any other throwable in BGMI.

When to Smoke

Crossing open ground. Pop a smoke in the direction you are running. The visual cover lets you move between positions without getting sniped.

Reviving teammates. Drop a smoke on your downed teammate before reviving. It blocks line of sight and buys you the 10 seconds needed to get them back up.

Looting safely. After wiping a squad, smoke the death boxes. Looting in the open makes you a target. The smoke lets you grab what you need without standing still in the open.

Retreating. When you are outnumbered, throw a smoke behind you as you run. Enemies cannot shoot what they cannot see.

Smoke Placement

Aim smoke at your feet or slightly ahead of your position. Do not throw it at the enemy. You want the cloud between you and them, not between them and their next piece of cover.

Smokes last about 15 seconds. Plan your movement within that window. If you need to cross a long field, you may need to throw two smokes in sequence.

Stun Grenades: The Underrated Option

Stun grenades do no damage, but they blind and disorient enemies for several seconds. A stunned player cannot aim, cannot run, and cannot hear properly.

When to Stun

Pushing a building. Throw a stun through the door before entering. The enemy is blind and deaf while you rush in. This turns a dangerous room clear into an easy kill.

Enemy squad holding a ridge. A stun over the ridge forces them to look away or take the full effect. Push while they are disoriented.

1v1 close fights. If you know exactly where the enemy is, a stun followed by a push almost always wins. The 2-3 seconds of blindness is enough to close the gap and finish the fight.

Stun Throw Tips

Bounce stuns off walls and floors. The explosion happens on contact with a surface. A well-bounced stun lands exactly where the enemy is without giving them time to look away.

Throw stuns before frags. If the enemy is stunned, they cannot run from your follow-up grenade. The combo is deadly.

Molotov Cocktails: Area Denial

Molotovs do damage over time in a spreading area. They are not instant kills but they control space.

When to Use Molotovs

Blocking a push. If enemies are rushing your position, throw a Molotov at the doorway or chokepoint. They have to wait for the fire to die or take heavy damage running through.

Flushing from cover. Unlike a frag, a Molotov covers a wider area. An enemy behind a small rock may still catch fire from the spreading pool.

Finishing downed players. A Molotov on a knocked enemy prevents them from being revived. The持续 damage ensures they bleed out even if their teammate reaches them.

Molotov Limitations

Molotovs do not go through walls or windows reliably. They break on impact with surfaces. Throw them at open doorways or over low walls where the fire can spread.

The fire lasts about 6 seconds. It is shorter than a smoke grenade. Plan your follow-up push within that window.

Loadout Recommendations

Carry at least 4-6 pieces of utility total. A balanced loadout for most players:

Utility Count Purpose
Frag Grenades 2 Offensive pushes, flushing
Smoke Grenades 3 Movement, revives, looting
Stun Grenades 1 Building pushes, 1v1s
Molotovs 1-2 Area denial, finishing

Adjust based on your playstyle. Aggressive players carry more frags. Support players carry more smokes.

Practice Routine

Go into training mode and practice throwing each type of utility:

  1. Cook a frag for 3 seconds and land it on a target 30 meters away
  2. Bounce a stun off a wall to hit a target behind cover
  3. Throw a smoke at your feet and sprint through it
  4. Arc a frag over a wall to hit a target on the other side

Do this for 5 minutes before your first match. It builds the throwing intuition that wins real fights.

Final Thoughts

Utility wins games. The player who carries and uses grenades, smokes, stuns, and Molotovs has a massive advantage over the player who relies on gun skill alone. Start carrying more throwables today. Your rank will thank you.
